¡Bienvenides!

My name is Sebastian Ferrada (they/them) and I am a queer, non-binary, Latinx interdisciplinary educator, writer, scholar, and podcast producer. I was born and raised in Whittier, California to immigrant parents (de Chile y México!). I teach a variety of courses in Ethnic Studies, Chicanx/Latinx Studies, and Queer Studies.

I earned my PhD and MA in Chicana and Chicano Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). My research more broadly encompasses the areas of Queer of Color critique, raciolinguistics, and the developing field of Jotería Studies, which merges Women of Color Feminisms and Queer Chicanx studies. I have published articles on Latinx language politics in Aztlán: A Journal of Chicano Studies, Journal of Language, Identity, and Education, and The Oxford Handbook of Language and Sexuality. I also have been featured on ¡Despierta América!, as well as in Zócalo Public Square, The San Francisco Chronicle, and even Fox News (they tried to drag me!). Check out the Scholarship section for links to my work.

From 2016 to 2022, I produced and co-hosted the Latinx podcast, Café con Chisme, with my sister, Yasmin Ferrada. The podcast focused on critical discussions related to race, politics, and pop culture from a Latinx Millennial perspective, especially during the “trumpudo” years. During our run we aimed to unpack conversations on everything from white supremacy, gender politics, and racism within Latinx communities. We also interviewed several dynamic guests such as Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Maria Hinojosa (Futuro Media, Latino USA), singer/songwriter Kat Dahlia (writer for Selena Gomez and Christina Aguilera), poet Yesika Salgado, director Manolo Caro (Casa de las Flores), and singer/songwriter iLe (formerly of Calle 13), amongst several others. I am currently working on a new podcast, Translate Me, that uplifts the narratives of queer and trans people.

If you would like to get in touch about possible collaborations, interviews, or to book me for your next speaking event, please check out the Services section or email me: drsebferrada@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you!
